Fusion Applications 11.1.8 installation is not straightforward unlike E-Business Suite 11i/R12 installation. So we need to divide the installation into a number of steps. Please note that 11.1.8 release provisioning is almost identical to 11.1.7 counterpart. At the same time the steps and a few components differ when compared to 11.1.6 and 11.1.5 . Here we have actually used the same 11.1.7 steps here for 11.1.8 guide and will mention wherever we see a difference compared to 11.1.7 steps.

Note: If you are looking for Fusion Applications 11.1.6 installation steps then you can refer to following link.

http://www.oratraining.com/blog/2013/03/oracle-fusion-applications-installation-step-by-step-guide-11-1-6/

If you are looking for Fusion Applications 11.1.5 installation steps then you can refer to following link.

http://www.oratraining.com/blog/2012/12/oracle-fusion-applications-installation-step-by-step-guide-11-1-5/

Following is our previous post which shows a few of the differences. More will be added soon.

http://www.oratraining.com/blog/2013/10/whats-new-in-fusion-applications-11-1-8-installationprovisioning/

In terms of architecture also there are a few changes which are already covered in the above link. Following is our previous post which shows different type of setups which we can choose for learning purpose.

http://www.oratraining.com/blog/2013/10/fusion-applications-architecture-for-2-or-3-nodes-setup-updated-for-11-1-8/

Here we will install Fusion Apps 11.1.8 in 2 nodes setup only for learning purpose but you can follow the same guide even for 3 nodes or 4 nodes setup since we have used hostname aliases for both database hosts including in the configuration so any point of time you can move databases across to separate node(s).

Following diagram shows the components in each host.

Node

Host name

Alias

Components

Node 1

idmhost

idmdbhost

1. Identity and Access Management components

(OID, OVD, OIF (optional), OAM, OIM, SOA)

2. Oracle Database for IDM

Node 2

fahost

fadbhost

1. Fusion Applications Domains

(Admin and Managed Servers for each product family)

2. Oracle Database for Fusion Apps

We are using following configuration for our installation.

Node 1
Hostname: idmhost
OS: Oracle Linux x86-64
Disk size: 300 GB
Memory: Minimum 8+ GB (Recommended 16+ GB)

Node 2
Hostname: fahost
OS: Oracle Linux x86-64
Disk size: 500 GB
Memory:

  • Option 1. For single product (except Financials, CRM or SCM) : Minimum 64+ GB (Recommended 96+ GB)
  • Option 2: For Financials or CRM or SCM: Minimum 88+ GB (Recommended 128 GB)
  • Option 3: For all products selected: Minimum 144+ GB

Fusion Application Installations can be largely divided into following steps.

Preparing for Oracle Fusion Applications installation

1. Downloading Oracle Fusion Applications media

2. Creating Oracle Fusion Applications provisioning repository / Staging directory

3. Installing OS (here Oracle Linux x86-64) on physical machine or Virtual machine (here Oracle VirtualBox VM)

Installing Oracle Fusion Applications – steps

A. Setting up Identity and Access Management Node

    1. Install Fusion Applications Provisioning Framework

    2. Install Oracle 11g Database (Identity management database)

    3. Run Repository Creation Utility (RCU) for Oracle Identity Management components

    4. Install Identity Management Provisioning Wizard

    5. Create IDM provisioning Response File

    6. Provision Identity Management

    7. Perform Post-Provisioning Configuration

B. Setting up Fusion Applications Node

    1. Install Fusion Applications Provisioning Framework

    2. Install Oracle 11g Database (Fusion Apps Database)

    3. Run Oracle Fusion Applications Repository Creation Utility (Applications RCU)

    4. Create new Applications Provisioning Response File

    5. Provision an Applications Environment

We are going to install Fusion Applications 11.1.8 for Oracle Linux x86-64 Operating system. So we will download the installation media for Oracle Fusion Applications 11.1.8 for Linux x86-64 from http://edelivery.oracle.com

Preparing for Oracle Fusion Applications installation

1. Downloading Oracle Fusion Applications media

Login to http://edelivery.oracle.com to access the following screen.

edelivery1118-1

Select “Oracle Fusion Applications” and required platform from the list. Click Go. Open the first pack.

edelivery1118-2

Download the first 17 media files (excluding README and documentation library). We will not need rest of the media for this installation.

2. Creating Oracle Fusion Applications provisioning repository / Staging directory

Unzip all these files into one Stage directory on your host OS.

Important Note: Since some of the files have very long directory path (very close to 255 characters), please unzip these files into stage folder name to keep short name. At least 2 files have very long path so let us try to avoid this.

For example, if you are creating the stage directory on Windows then try to unzip into c:\stage or e:\stage etc

3. Install OS on physical machine or Virtual Machine

We have installed the OS on Oracle VirtualBox VM with Oracle Linux x86-64 OS as guest and Windows 2008 as host OS.

    Tushar

I have seen many comments about having a vast amount of memory on the Fusion Applications node , however if i just want to install Fusion Applications ( just the financial modules) and look at it , ie no users do I still have to have 104gb of memory on the fusion node ?

      Mar 22nd, 2016 at 19:21 | #10

      Dear Sharon,

Yes it would still require at least 90 GB (FA) + 16 GB (IDM) in order to “Start up” Fusion Applications even if only Financials was provisioned. The reason being a large number of WebLogic Domains and managed servers being configured due to inter-dependencies and the number is easily in tunes of 50+ with each managed server requiring average 1.5 to 2 GB memory to “start up” only. I hope this clarifies.

If you are planning to setup an on-premise installation of Fusion Apps then you would find my book “Pro Oracle Fusion Applications” useful especially the planning section which explains this in much more details.

      Thanks

Thanks Tushar . I have just put in a request to get a second node with ample memory for the FA requirements , the other node with 32gb I can get pretty quickly. As soon as I have them both I will install 11.1.11 of the Fusion Apps. Is there much difference in the installation steps between 11.1.8 and 11.1.11.

Also I have just purchased your book from Amazon “Pro Oracle Fusion Applications “, can’t wait to get it.

I have an instance of Oracle Fusion Cloud and it is up and working fine. But the functional set up in the instance is wrong and we need to scrap the data altogether and need to re-implement. what are the steps to do that. And since Oracle is itself handling cloud support, will there be any impact on licensing?

    Hi Tushar,

First best of luck for book!! Waiting for it eagerly…

I want to know if you have any idea that, if Fusion Apps 11.1.7 can be upgraded to 11.1.9.2 directly or we need to go for 11.1.7–>11.1.8–>11.1.9.2

Also, do you have any tutorial for upgrade of Fusion Apps?

Just confirmed with Oracle, There is no direct upgrade from Fusion Applications 11.1.7 to 11.1.9, you will need to do a two step upgrade. First upgrade from 11.1.7 to 11.1.8 then 11.1.8 to 11.1.9.2.

Tushar Do you have any upgrade tutorials for the any versions of Fusion Apps, since i am doing it for first time, having some screenshots would help 😉

      Dear Prakhar,

You should use the same physical server only, just create two Linux VMs on the same server for IDM and FA each. Keeping single server or VM for both nodes is not recommended due to overlapping ports.

      Good luck.

Do not want to dishearten you but the answer is No, you cannot install Fusion Financials with 32GB of system memory. There are 2 nodes with first node requiring “minimum” 10GB memory while second node with minimum 104GB memory and also 2 physical CPUs (quad core or more)

Hi , I am starting with the installation. I want to make the easiest one.
Do I need only one VM with Oracle Linux x86-64 OS as guest and Windows 2008 as host OS?
    Thanks.

    Dear Tushar
We are looking for a remote access site like the Beacon site for eBusiness? Do you provide it? Or a VM image where I can download. Thank you for the great work you published here.

    Hi,
We followed the steps provided in this article and on node1 installed IDM, on node2 we are trying to install Fusion Applications (Product Management only) but are stuck at the install phase and keep getting below error:

    “DatabaseClient: private-install-dbclient oui10g – BUILD_ERROR : OUI10g installer failed: /u01/dumps/FusionApps/Stage/installers/dbclient/client/runInstaller [2014-08-27 15:24:07 EDT] DatabaseClient: listener-log-status-in-error private-install-dbclient – BUILD_ERROR”

Really appreciate any pointers on resolving this issue.

    Thanks,
    Mohit

Update: in the logs just before this error I see the below error, this might be the root cause of the earlier mentioned error.
Appreciate if someone can help in resolving the error.

Preparing to launch Oracle Universal Installer from /tmp/OraInstall2014-08-27_05-55-24PM. Please wait …[../stage/Components/oracle.jdk/1.5.0.11.0/1/DataFiles/lib.jar]

latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on

        Hi Tushar,

First Very thank for the response.

I am very much comfortable with Windows OS and I tried to install on windows server but it was fail because of lack of RAM.

I am lilbit aware about linux OS so , now i am planning with linux server. so how need to know how i can configure these two nodes and after that i will follow your above steps.

Just need more information about the Unix Os version, Oracle VM and from where i can get it.

        Thanks,
        Dhanraj

          Dear Dhanraj,

Please note that you need someone good at Unix while doing installation of the same since it involves a lot of steps where you may need to work directly in Unix shell. We have used Oracle Linux 5.x and Oracle VirtualBox for virtualization.

          Regards

With reference to your node 2 requirements:
    ——————————
    Node 2
    Hostname: fahost
    OS: Oracle Linux x86-64
    Disk size: 500 GB
    Memory:

Option 1. For single product (except Financials, CRM or SCM) : Minimum 64+ GB (Recommended 96+ GB)
Option 2: For Financials or CRM or SCM: Minimum 88+ GB (Recommended 128 GB)
Option 3: For all products selected: Minimum 144+ GB
    ————————–

I have access to 3 PCs each with 32GB memory – would it be possible to split your node2 Financials install across these 3 machines and how would you suggest the components be so divided? (I have a laptop with 16GB memory which I will use for running your node1 (idmhost) under Virtualbox)

    Hi Tushar,
I have successfully completed the installation, but I’m having issue after the SSO login.

when i go to URL –
    https://fahost:10634/homepage

    it redirects to –
    https://idmhost:7777/oam/server/obrareq.cgi?encquery

and when i enter user and pwd and click sign then i get the error –
    “This webpage has redirect loop”.

Please suggest how can i resolve this issue.

    Thanks,
    hari

      Dear Harry,

I am sure you would have figured out the solution by now but I just noticed your comment so replying anyway.

The redirect loop issue in Fusion Apps or any OAM integrated application is caused if you have time difference in both nodes. Just make sure to sync the time either using NTP or manually on both nodes (nearly same is fine) and the issue will be resolved.

      Thanks
      Tushar

Great article and it’s very kind of you to share your learnings. Well done!

    Reposting again. Appreciate your help.

    Hi Tushar,

What is the lowest configuration that one can have to get a financial fusion installed in their system. Need to know…

    No of Servers:
    Hard Disk Space:
    Memory:

If no. of servers can be just 1, then let me know what the worst can be for the memory.

    Appreciate your help in advance.

    Regards,

    Anand

      Dear Anand,

On this same page where you commented, the minimum memory and space requirements are mentioned. Please note that from 11.1.7 onwards it is recommended to have at least 2 nodes.

        Tushar,

Thank you for the response. My issue is I am trying to do the installation in my personal home space. I have only one machine which has 12GB memory and sufficient hard disk space. I can expand this to 16GB but for now this is the max I can go. At present I am using Oracle VM with 8GB memory. I have completed the IDM Host part and it is successful. The space used was only 60GB in the hard disk. Will it still work if I put everything into one single machine?

I understand performance would be bad but is that it or this will not even work?

        Appreciate your help.

          Dear Anand,

The configuration that you have is good for IDM node but please note that for Fusion Applications you need very high memory since it creates more than 30-40 managed servers and 5-6 admin servers based on products selection each needing more than 1 GB or RAM so you can understand that the installation will fail with out of memory issues. I would recommend you not to go ahead with this configuration since it can cause a lot of frustration to you during installation. If you had more RAM available then I could have advised you to go with 1 node as well using our previous guides.

          Regards
          Tushar

            Tushar,

Thank you for the response. What is the minimum RAM I need to Install IDM and Financials as a single node? Will 32GB be good enough?

I didnt see your previous guides for installing 11.1.7 in a single node. Appreciate if you can point me to that as well.

I am trying to get a 64GB Machine with 3TB Hard Disk Space. Once I have it, then these should work I suppose. I will use your logic to have two nodes in a single machine there by I can resolve all issues.

Please send me the details about the cost to my email id.

Having confirmed this many times earlier, I would like to say again the same for the last time that unless your machine has memory to host node1 and node2 both, do not expect to run Fusion Apps on the same or invest in it.

      Dear Rajesh,

The port details are already there in web alias configuration file. For your reference there are both secure and insecure ports (http://fahost:10633 and https://fahost:10634) but FA by default will use secure port only and will redirect further pages back to secure port. You will get certificate warning only once if you are using demo machine.

      Dear Rajesh,

Earlier I used to publish steps for JVM size reduction up to 50% but since 11.1.7 we have noticed that these soft-tuning really work for a while till you really start using the managed servers and Oracle has correctly sized the JVMs based on the requirements and even if you tune it (please read soft-tune), it will reach same or higher value once you start using it.

      Thanks

For the hardware requirements, the RAM recommendations are very high.
What type of hardware are you guys using?

In the current market, unless we move into the server territory, we can only buy / build a workstation with max 64GB RAM. For servers having 128GB RAM seems to be easier, however it becomes prohibitively expensive for a end user.

Is there any recommendations on the cost effective physical hardware?

    • tushar
      Nov 4th, 2013 at 07:09 | #97

      Dear Ashok,

You are right. But the concept that workstations are always cheaper than servers is not right. Most high-end workstations cost more than entry level servers. For example we have used the entry level servers ML150 or ML350 as well to install Fusion Apps successfully.

Also when you see the maximum memory capacity for Workstations or Servers you might see upto 64 GB etc but if you look closely, they have mentioned 2GB or 4GB modules only. Most new workstations/servers do support 8GB ECC memory but they have not officially certified them. For learning purpose you can try and see if the particular machine supports 8GB and this will drastically increase max memory support.

      – Tushar
